It’s been a while since the first Audio Account, but that’s because I’ve not been too indulgent in listening to music recently having started my first job and being over-encumbered with school work as exams loom over the horizon! Nevertheless I’ve decided to write another one of these in one of the short spaces of free time that I have, so here we go.
#1: Billy Joel – We Didn’t Start The Fire
Not many people can claim to have written a song that sticks in people’s minds as much as We Didn’t Start The Fire, but the legend that is Billy Joel certainly can. Incase you don’t know, the verses simply consist of short phrases linked to historical events in a chronological order, all of which taking place in Billy’s lifetime up to the point of release of the song (1949-1989). The song has received mixed reaction over the years, but I think it doesn’t deserve the crap it gets. It’s a novelty song, no doubt, Billy even said so himself, but it’s clever and catchy nonetheless. The ‘fire’ that he alludes to seems to be a metaphor for events that happen, and that no matter what, these events will always affect us and there’s nothing we can do about it whether we try to fight it or not.
#2 Great Scott – Miss Music
The latest song from Burton-based Hip-Hop duo Great Scott is one of my favourite songs right now. Written and rapped by Jaws and Young Criss, they describe their love of music through the metaphor of a woman. It’s clear that both of them appreciate the opportunity that they’ve been given to create music and that they love what they do, and I think there’s nothing better than when artists are clearly passionate about their creations. Once again as always, top-notch work on the production side of things as the backing track is simply awesome, with vinyl scratches, saxaphone and an excellent sample from Barefoot Jerry – Smokies. Once again Great Scott make me feel guilty that I’ve only seen then perform once despite living so close, and this song reminds me that I certainly need to see them again!

#3: Friendly Fires – Paris (Aeroplane Remix)
As I’ve become more invested into revision and having to study more often, relaxing music has definitely helped. This remix is much less intense than the original song (which I still love), especially with the tranquil, breathy vocals of Au Revoir Simone. A personal favourite of mine which I always seem to be coming back to.
This was the second edition of Audio Account, I hope that you’ve enjoyed reading / listening, and you should definitely comment your thoughts and opinions on the songs!
